We know at Royal Oak Michigan Dog Training that most dog trainers are teaching some sort of either positive or negative reinforcement. I.e. either do good and get reward or do bad and get punishment. Let me just say all types of dog training can work. Dogs are smart! People have been training dogs for a long, long time to do different things. But just like everything else in the world, there are good and bad methods, fast and so methods, efficient and not efficient methods.

Let’s jump into some of the problems we have with positive reinforcement here at Royal Oak Michigan Dog Training. Our biggest problem? If the dog is paid for good behavior and it stops getting paid, treats, and the good behavior normally stops as well. Kinda like if your boss stop paying you, then your enthusiasm for work with probably go down and probably would stop working. And that also kinda goes with our number two biggest problem, if a higher reward than your tree comes by your dog will always go for whatever is the highest reward for its dog brain. Kinda like how you always take a $10 bill over a five dollar bill.

One of the biggest problems we have at Royal Oak Michigan Dog Training is that timing is full. Typically, positive reinforcement only trainers will limit only one dog handler per class. When it comes reward-based training, if you tell your dog sit and then pause five seconds and then reward the dog, then you actually just rewarded your dog for staying, not sitting you said, and your dog comes and then you fumble with your treats and the dog sits and then you pay them with food, you just rewarded your dog for setting. Not the actual command. Most food rewards need to be delivered to the dog and under two seconds of the dog performing this behavior, and this can hit very hard.

Your dog will also have different respects for different people. Depending on how different family members pay the dog with food, this will depend on how the dog respond to them. If mom pays excellent, lots of treats, and dad pays stingy, very few treats, then the dog listens to mom and doesn’t as much to dad because the one is a better paying boss then the other. Plus, some dogs are not very food motivated. Poultry tanning can work good indoors, it suddenly works out doors and heavy distractions. Obviously, training dogs with positive reinforcement works and lots of people do it, but these are just some of the disadvantages.

Royal Oak Michigan Dog Training

Let’s start this out by saying we understand at Royal Oak Michigan Dog Training that all types of dog training can work. People have been training dogs for a long, long time to do different things. But like everything else in the world, there are good and bad methods, fast and so methods, efficient and not efficient methods. Dogs are smart. Obviously, training dogs with negative reinforcement can work and lots of people do it, but let’s go over some of the disadvantages so you know exactly what to expect.

Let’s start with an example we’ve had here at Royal Oak Michigan Dog Training. If you have an 85 pound Doberman and you are using a prom or Pinch collar, then the man of the family may be able to work the dog, but the 14-year-old girl will not be able to muscle the dog around or generate the same fear or respect as a grown man would. This is one of our biggest problems with negative reinforcement. Depending on people’s personalities, some styles can work for people that have no problem being harsh with the dog, but don’t work for gentler dog handlers or for children.

We, Royal Oak Michigan Dog Training, know when using negative reinforcement (like a Pinch collar) if the dog doesn’t listen or is distracted, they get harder and harder chokes on the caller and more pressure on her neck and throw until they listen. OUCH! This can ruin the dog’s attitude. If a trainer is really harshly correcting the dog, then he can really dampen the dog’s attitude and make the knowledge training or not like the trainer. Pinch, prawn, and show callers kill dogs every year from blunt force trauma to the throat. It is very hard to transfer from a prong or Pinch collar to off leash obedience training.

Using negatives can make aggressive dogs more aggressive. And that’s not what we’re about. A quick example. If you have an aggressive people and every time he lunges for dog, you give him a big jerk on a Pinch collar. A lot of really aggressive dogs will see that correction coming from you, since you are on the other end of the leash, and will come up that leash and redirect their aggression to you. This is very common with aggressive dogs and Pinch collars. If you can’t tell by now, we really don’t like Pinch collars and shock collars. We get that some people don’t get good results with traditional training methods, but we do.
